Echoes of Bahçeli's call continue: Warnings from a figure close to the government
MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli's call regarding Öcalan continues to resonate in politics. Türkiye newspaper columnist Cem Küçük stated following this call that "No one can handle a second Habur."
MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli's statements regarding the leader of the terrorist organization, Abdullah Öcalan, continue to be debated in politics.
Among those commenting on this call was Cem Küçük, a columnist for the pro-government newspaper Türkiye.
Küçük expressed his criticisms of Bahçeli's call in his column, stating, "The People's Alliance should not lose what it has while chasing after something else."
Stating that this would cause the People's Alliance to lose votes, Küçük wrote the following:
"For my part, I never find it right for the head of the terrorists to come to Parliament. It is never right for a terrorist who is the murderer of 40 thousand people and has been dubbed a 'baby killer' to come to Parliament and take an oath. I do not think the Turkish people will ever accept this. Such things sometimes backfire severely. It would backfire in the first elections and cause the People's Alliance to lose significant votes...
Another issue that needs to be explained is that this situation is not about making a constitutional amendment with the DEM Party so that our President can be a candidate for another term. If the isolation of Öcalan is lifted, the DEM Party will give the green light in Parliament for Erdoğan to be a candidate for another term. This would mean the same arrows that the government has rightly pointed at the opposition for years for being linked to the side branch of the terrorist organization would turn back on the government itself.
I think the most important thing is, what will the public say to this? The Turkish people will never accept Öcalan taking an oath in Parliament. The HDP electorate will not turn to the People's Alliance just because the government did this. In the second round of the Istanbul elections in 2019, a letter from Öcalan was read. The result was a heavy disappointment for the AK Party.
It was wrong to ask for money from citizens' credit cards for the defense industry, and it backfired. The nation did not accept it. The demands for a Solution Process also did not find approval. Therefore, Bahçeli's proposal must be thoroughly discussed and calculated. The solution process that began in 2008 was necessary and received support from the public. But it was the PKK, at the request of the US, that overturned the table. A new solution process is not possible anyway.
The People's Alliance should not lose what it has while chasing after something else. Up to the hour I wrote this article, many nationalist readers and viewers have conveyed to me that Öcalan coming to Parliament is never acceptable.
No one can handle a second Habur. PKK terrorists could take on the air of having won a victory."
WHAT HAPPENED?
MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli had made the following remarks regarding PKK terrorist organization leader Abdullah Öcalan: "If the isolation of the head of the terrorists is lifted, let him come and speak at the DEM Party group meeting in the Turkish Grand National Assembly. Let him declare that terrorism has completely ended and the organization has been disbanded. If he shows this resolve and determination, let the legal arrangements regarding the use of the right to hope be made and the path for him to benefit from it be opened wide. Let the address extend from Imralı to DEM, not Kandil or Edirne, and let this heavy and historical terror problem be completely removed from the country's agenda. I challenge you, we are ready for this."
DEM PARTY SUPPORTED
The response to this call from Bahçeli did not take long from the DEM Party. DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları responded to Bahçeli's call, saying, "The interlocutor of the Kurdish issue in Turkey is Abdullah Öcalan. If there is to be a beginning, the isolation must be lifted immediately. We are ready to take initiative for an honorable peace."
"We have been struggling for years for the isolation on Öcalan to be lifted. It must definitely be lifted. We say let him come physically and speak. Let us all see what he says. Steps must be taken urgently on this matter without wasting time. I underline once again that we, as the DEM Party, are ready to do whatever is necessary on this matter." she had said.
