Ekrem İmamoğlu calls for an investigation: 'The greatest betrayal in history'
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has issued a call for water conservation, stating that dam occupancy rates in Istanbul have fallen to critical levels. İmamoğlu also drew attention to public losses in the Kanal Istanbul and Melen Dam projects.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu issued a warning as water levels in dams reached critical levels. Stating that occupancy rates of drinking water dams in Istanbul have dropped to very low levels due to the effects of climate change and drought, İmamoğlu invited citizens to be cautious about water conservation.
İmamoğlu also drew attention to rent-oriented projects in Istanbul, primarily the Kanal Istanbul project. Expressing that these projects harm Istanbul's natural resources, forest areas, and water basins, İmamoğlu emphasized that Kanal Istanbul is not a project for the benefit of the public. He also addressed the disruptions in the construction of the Melen Dam and the aspects that have caused public financial loss.
STATEMENTS IN İMAMOĞLU'S POST
The following statements were included in the explanation made by İmamoğlu via social media:
"Due to climate change and drought, the occupancy rates of drinking water dams in Istanbul, as in many provinces of Turkey, have dropped significantly. I invite our fellow Istanbulites and all our citizens to save water and be more careful in their water usage.
In such a critical period, the Sazlıdere Dam, one of Istanbul's most important drinking water dams, was canceled by the Presidency with a single signature. Furthermore, the destruction of Istanbul's agricultural lands, forest areas, water basins, and military zones for the sake of rent and concrete, and handing them over to projects like Kanal Istanbul, is the greatest betrayal in our history, and I entrust this to the conscience of our nation.
In addition, the Melen Dam, which could not be completed for 11 years, was supposed to play a critical role in supplying Istanbul's drinking water. However, the dam could not be finished due to project errors and wrong choices. The structures built have become unusable. This situation has caused tens of billions of TL in losses to the public. I reiterate that necessary investigations should be conducted regarding the matter and that an inquiry should be opened against the relevant individuals."
