Ekrem İmamoğlu describes Ramadan in Silivri: 'Food is served 2 hours before iftar'

CHP's imprisoned Presidential Candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu has shared with the public the third video in his series regarding the days he spent in Silivri Prison, titled "Being in Silivri During Ramadan." In the video, which was created with the help of artificial intelligence, the following statements were made in İmamoğlu's voice:

"In this meeting, I want to tell you a Ramadan narrative that begins with suhoor. Of course, it must be admitted that it is not easy to fast alone in an isolated state while imprisoned.

First of all, Ramadan and fasting are a month and an act of worship that allow people to feel and understand one another. In other words, Ramadan is beautiful, meaningful, and based on solidarity when spent with crowds.

I do not wake up for suhoor here. Because it is not easy for me to start suhoor alone with preparation and a small breakfast plate. I prefer to have my breakfast and go to sleep between 00:00 and 01:00 at night, depending on the intensity of the day. A distribution for suhoor is already made towards 00:00. Food is usually provided for suhoor, but my choice has been not to take the food distributed at suhoor. I will explain the reason for that in a moment.

''THE SOUND OF THE ALARM CLOCK IN SILIVRI IS AS BROKEN AS THE SOUND OF JUSTICE''

From my childhood until I went to university, we would have suhoor with our family every Ramadan. These suhoor tables had become a tradition for us. With my university years, we turned this tradition into breakfast with my family. Since it is impossible for me to hear the faint alarm sound of my alarm clock, which is incapable of fulfilling its function, from the canteen, I cannot wake up for suhoor even if I wanted to. Since the sound of the alarm clock in Silivri is as faint as the sound of justice, I had to establish a routine of my own. As for iftar, food distribution for iftar is done around 16:00 to 16:30. That is, about 2 hours before iftar. I can eat the food in a slightly cooled state. But what about the soup? I found the solution for that in the electric kettle. I heat my soup, which I put in a small pot close to iftar time, in the steam of the boiling water. I break my fast with dates and water, which I bought from the canteen and which are sometimes also provided with the service.

''I STRUGGLED FOR THE FIRST TIME''

As someone who has been fasting since a very young age, I can say that I struggled for the first time despite it being winter, due to the state of imprisonment and especially the atmosphere of being alone and isolated. Ramadan did not start easily for me within the framework of my intense readings during the day and especially my preparations for the hearings.

The results of the blood tests I had done before Ramadan came out very well. Therefore, my health is quite good. I would especially like to express that I can see that the shifts and conditions here are difficult not only for us prisoners but also for the employees. But life is always difficult anyway.

My prayers during Ramadan are for the mentality that causes this injustice to be experienced at the highest level to be sent away as soon as possible by the will of the nation. I know how full of abundance and peace the month of Ramadan will be in days of justice and freedom, and I herald this to our people.

I am taking notes on verses related to justice and being a good person, mostly from the Quran translation by Muhammad Asad in my library. I recommend it to those who are interested. It is also enjoyable to look at it comparatively with the translation of Mehmet Okuyan Hoca. Both are very valuable works.

Normally, I preferred not to go out for visits after 19:30. During Ramadan, I meet with my lawyer after 19:30, at the end of iftar. The small chats we had with our fellow prisoners, where I could find the opportunity to greet from cabin to cabin during this meeting time, will remain in our memory as 'Ramadan Chats in Silivri', even if they were from window to window, they were heart to heart.

The Ramadan tables of my neighbors and fellow citizens, whom I have been a guest of for 17 years, and the moment of iftar when I met with my family are my greatest longing. Wishing to meet in the days when our longing is eased, I wish you all a blessed Ramadan."
