Ekrem İmamoğlu: "No issue that affects the fate of the country can be left to the whim of one person"
The repercussions of the remarks made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli regarding terrorist leader Öcalan during his party's group meeting continue. Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has issued a veiled response to Bahçeli regarding 'Öcalan'.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu attended a signing ceremony in Maltepe. There, in response to Devlet Bahçeli's words regarding terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan—"Let him come to Parliament, declare that terrorism has ended and the organization has been disbanded"—he stated that no issue affecting the fate of the country could be left to the whim of one person.
Emphasizing the importance of acting together on significant issues concerning the nation's future, İmamoğlu said, "Do not bring further troubles upon the nation." The full text of İmamoğlu's speech:
"No issue in this country, especially one that affects its fate, can ever be left to the whim of one person. The major issues of this country, or any matter belonging to it, require being addressed with sincerity, honesty, an understanding that protects every individual, negotiation, collective wisdom, a national perspective, and a stance that gathers every person under that national roof.
IF THERE IS NO COOPERATION, YOU WILL BRING FURTHER TROUBLES UPON THE NATION
In this context, every path taken, every true word spoken, and every attitude and stance presented will be respected by us. But in such public matters, in important issues concerning the future of society and the nation, if you do not demonstrate cooperation and act together, then you will bring further troubles upon this nation. May God protect this nation from troubles.
MAY GOD PROTECT THIS NATION FROM 'I KNOW BEST' ATTITUDES
And may He protect this nation from 'I know best' attitudes. We will create a country where we think together with collective wisdom, considering the expectations of this nation—asking 'What does my people want from me?', 'How should I provide it?', 'Why are they standing in the corner feeling ashamed?', 'Why are they dejected, why are they frowning?', 'Why does a society feel left behind?'—a country where all 86 million people of this beautiful, dear republic are happy and peaceful, where everyone can say, 'I am an equal shareholder of these lands, my brother,' 'My head is held high,' 'If my child works hard, they will get a job based on merit,' and 'If my child works hard, they will reach the very top.' This is our path, this is our journey, and no one will make us turn back."
