Ekrem İmamoğlu's legitimacy jab at Erdoğan

Following the expert witness trial in Silivri today, which was adjourned, İmamoğlu made a post on his social media account referencing the hottest headline of the day.

He shared the "President İmamoğlu" chants echoing in the courtroom with the caption, "Legitimacy is derived from the nation."

CHP Leader Özgür Özel also touched upon the 'legitimacy' debate upon leaving Silivri. Özel stated the following:

“What is the first thing Trump reminds us of? He says, 'This person knows rigged elections best.' In other words, he is saying he has no legitimacy in his own country. He has no legitimacy in American public opinion either...

“An opportunist like Trump secures so many benefits and then keeps repeating that he is a 'good man.' He has my ministers in front of him, the ministers of this country. He says, 'They are smart.' They are clever. I wish they weren't this clever. Are you coddling children?

“Legitimacy is derived from the nation. You enter an election, you win, and you become a legitimately elected government. Legitimacy is maintained through democratic governance. Antidemocratic behaviors at home... Legitimacy is questionable.”

'I will give you legitimacy. This person knows rigged elections, he knows best,' he says. This means if there is a debate about your election, you have no legitimacy. If you do not govern democratically, you have no legitimacy, but if you buy LNG, if you buy Boeing, if you make concessions, if you make a nuclear deal, if you provide rare earth elements, the man gives you legitimacy with his own mouth.
