Ekrem İmamoğlu's statement on 'Özel' during court recess: 'We have a leader like a diamond'

The second hearing was held in the trial of CHP's imprisoned presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, regarding his statements about Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek.

In the prosecutor's opinion, it was requested that İmamoğlu be sentenced to between 2 years and 8 months and 7 years and 4 months in prison for the crimes of "publicly insulting a public official due to their duty," "threatening," and "targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism." Additionally, a 'political ban' was also requested.

The court panel adjourned the hearing to July 16, 2025.

"OUR CHAIRMAN IS MAGNIFICENT"

Ekrem İmamoğlu answered journalists' questions during a 5-minute recess in the hearing.

Stating, "I am reading some recent history," İmamoğlu said, "I have finished 12-13 books. We run into Ümit Özdağ, we greet each other."

Speaking about CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, İmamoğlu said, "We have a leader like a diamond. Our Chairman is magnificent. Such companionship makes one proud. It is a blessing that our nation is such a nation."
