Erdoğan calls for change to '50%+1' rule: It leads parties down the wrong path

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements on the plane while returning from his visit to Germany.

Stating that he wants a ceasefire to be achieved as soon as possible regarding Israel's attacks on Gaza, Erdoğan said, "Our priority will be to establish a lasting peace along with a ceasefire."

Repeating his message on constitutional amendment, Erdoğan said he wants the '50%+1' system to be changed.

"WE WILL REBUILD THE DAMAGED INFRASTRUCTURE IN GAZA"

Here are the highlights from Erdoğan's statements:

"The most correct step to be taken for Gaza is to ensure a ceasefire as soon as possible, and our priority will be to establish a lasting peace along with a ceasefire. If a ceasefire is achieved, we will do whatever is necessary to compensate for the destruction caused by Israel. We will strive to rebuild the damaged infrastructure in Gaza, and to reconstruct the destroyed schools, hospitals, and water and energy facilities. Following the establishment of a ceasefire, we will do our best to improve the living conditions of the people of Gaza and to revive their hopes.

'NETANYAHU IS ON HIS WAY OUT'

Netanyahu is on his way out; we are getting rid of him. Hopefully, Israel will also be rid of him, and all the Jews of the world will be rid of him as well. Currently, 60-70 percent of the people in his own country are against Netanyahu. Because he is making both his country and the world pay a heavy price. Right now, everyone is feeding him with weapons and money, but this situation is costing the countries that support him. As long as we are strong.

'EUROFIGHTER DEBATE'

The Chancellor did not touch upon this subject at all. In other words, he did not comment on whether they would provide the Eurofighter or not. We have already given our answer clearly. If they give us these planes, they give them; if they don't, is there no other door for us to knock on? There are many. You know, what steps were taken before the S-400s in air defense systems? America did not provide the air defense systems it was supposed to, and we bought the S-400s from Russia. We have our S-400s now. Hopefully, we will continue on our path in a much stronger way. We are moving towards becoming a country that produces and uses its own weapons. We are also taking steps to permanently meet our needs regarding fighter jets.

'50%+1 MUST CHANGE'

I am of the same opinion regarding the change of the 50+1 requirement; it would be appropriate. If we switch to a system where the candidate who receives the majority is elected, the presidential election would also be quick, it wouldn't be a hassle, and it wouldn't lead to wrong paths. The current 50+1 obligation leads parties down the wrong paths. It is unclear who is in whose pocket. There is a table of six, a table of sixteen... Who knows what else will come out after this? But when it is said that 'the candidate who receives the most votes is elected' in terms of the number of votes, the election is completed quickly.

Bringing a new, civilian, inclusive constitution that is fully compatible with the requirements of the age to Turkey is one of our most important goals that we desire to achieve. We have started work on a new constitution in Parliament several times, but it has always been left unfinished due to the obstruction of the opposition and their failure to keep their promises. We stand behind the promise we made; we will provide our nation with the civilian constitution it deserves."
