Erdoğan had said 'I do not grant my blessing': Discontent over 100 MPs in AKP

With the transition to the Presidential Government System, the participation of AKP MPs in legislative activities in Parliament has decreased.

According to a report by Emrah Özcan from Türkiye newspaper; the AKP leadership has evaluated the performance of its MPs. Nearly 100 new MPs received failing grades. It was determined that these MPs are constantly absent, do not come to the General Assembly, and do not participate in legislative activities.

MPS WARNED

It was noted that experienced figures who were uncomfortable with this situation reported it to the party leadership, and the MPs were warned.

In the parliamentary elections held on May 14, 2023, 63.49 percent of the parliament was renewed. In the 600-seat Parliament, 335 MPs were elected for the first time. In the AKP, which has 268 seats, 148 MPs entered Parliament for the first time this term. In the 27th term of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM), 32 individuals who served as MPs never took the floor in the General Assembly, did not prepare any legislative proposals, and did not sign any research, investigation, or general debate motions.

On the other hand, with the latest raise (19.31 percent), MP salaries have reached 170 thousand liras.

ERDOĞAN HAD WARNED

President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan criticized his party's MPs in February of last year for failing to provide sufficient attendance at the General Assembly meetings of Parliament. Erdoğan had said, "This nation will not grant you its blessing. I do not grant my blessing to those who did not attend."
