Erkan Baş's call to Parliament for Can Atalay: 'The Grand National Assembly is currently under tutelage'
Calling on members of parliament regarding Can Atalay, who has not been released despite a Constitutional Court ruling, TİP leader Erkan Baş said, "It is not just Can Atalay and the people of Hatay who are suffering rights violations. The Grand National Assembly is currently under tutelage."
Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Chairman Erkan Baş has issued a call to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) regarding TİP Hatay MP Can Atalay, who remains imprisoned despite a Constitutional Court (AYM) ruling.
Speaking in front of the Istanbul Courthouse, Erkan Baş said, "We are making a call to all political party groups in Parliament, to the representatives of political parties without groups, and to all our fellow members of parliament one by one. It is not just Can Atalay and the people of Hatay who are suffering rights violations. The TBMM is also currently under tutelage. One of its members is being held in prison unlawfully."
Noting that the Constitutional Court had issued a ruling for "release" in addition to its finding of a rights violation, Baş stated, "This situation has been allowed to continue unlawfully for days. We interpret this as the end of a rights violation. Since the beginning of the Gezi Park trial, we have been saying that this is a political case. We have been explaining that Can has been held captive by the Palace since he was elected as an MP. In fact, we see that this claim of ours has been confirmed."
'WE WILL NOT GET USED TO THE CONSTITUTION AND THE LAW BEING TRAMPLED UPON'
Stating that "courts need to create the impression that they are making impartial decisions, rather than just whether they are actually doing so," Baş said the following:
"Courts need to ease the conscience of society. Courts have such a responsibility. However, we are all asking, 'Where is the instruction being awaited from?' It has been confirmed once again that one of the most important problems in Turkey is justice, and that it is a bleeding wound for the country. We are stubborn about one thing. We will not get used to the Constitution and the law being trampled upon in Turkey. Our lawyer friends have been here for days. We actually got what we wanted from the court, so the march resulted in a victory. Can must be released without wasting any time."
