Expected to pass in Parliament before the holiday: Disagreement between AKP and DEM Party
A disagreement between the AKP and the DEM Party has prevented the enactment of an execution regulation, which would have seen the release of approximately 55 thousand prisoners, before the holiday. DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli announced that the regulation has been postponed until the autumn.
The execution regulation, which has been debated in the public eye for a long time, has been postponed due to a disagreement between the AKP and the DEM Party regarding 'organized crimes'. The regulation, which was expected to pass through Parliament before the holiday, has been left for the autumn.
DEM Party Group Deputy Chair Sezai Temelli shared the details of the judicial package that the AKP will submit to Parliament, stating, "There is no significant change regarding execution in this package. Despite our suggestions and consultations, the government has not made a real execution regulation. Other execution regulations were left for the autumn because they carry certain risks."
Temelli noted that while the package to be submitted will include regulations for sick prisoners, the expected execution regulation is not included.
DEM WANTED IT TO COVER 'ORGANIZED CRIMES' AS WELL
While the DEM Party demanded that the execution regulation also cover 'organized crimes', the AKP opposed this request on the grounds that those convicted in FETÖ cases could also benefit from it. As no common ground could be found in the meetings held today, it was decided that the regulation would be submitted to the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in a way that only covers sick prisoners.
