New Welfare Party (YRP) Chairman Fatih Erbakan, whose party became the third-largest in Turkey by receiving 6.19 percent of the vote in the March 31 Local Elections, made statements regarding the agenda during a live broadcast on KRT.

Erbakan responded to the remarks made by MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli, a partner in the People's Alliance, who had said, "Everyone will learn where those who are incapable of carrying the weight of their surname stand, who and what they serve, and how they have lost their consciousness for the sake of their interests."

"HE IS THE AGE OF OUR FATHER, PERHAPS EVEN OUR GRANDFATHER"

Stating that he does not want to engage in polemics, Erbakan said, "Bahçeli is the age of our father, perhaps even our grandfather. We do not find it appropriate to engage in a mutual war of words. When we were founding the YRP, we already said that we would bring courtesy to politics and produce solutions instead of fighting. Therefore, our view on this matter is in this direction," he stated.

WHAT HAD HAPPENED?

MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli had targeted YRP Chairman Fatih Erbakan without naming him during his speech at his party's group meeting.

"The fact that those who live off an inheritance open a front on the issue of Palestine, accuse Turkey, and chew on the Kürecik gum by claiming that jet fuel is being sold, stands before us like a wall of shame," said Bahçeli, continuing as follows:

"Everyone will learn where those who are incapable of carrying the weight of their surname stand, who and what they serve, and how they have lost their consciousness for the sake of their interests. I believe that our nation will not tolerate, and God will not forgive, those who take on all sorts of guises to win 3-5 municipalities and satisfy their political ambitions and passions. They have no ayran to drink, yet they ride a horse to the fountain. They have no goal other than to weaken the People's Alliance."
