First thing she did upon arrival: Mayor who switched to AKP faces backlash from within the party over Erdoğan portrait

Yalova Altınova Municipality Mayor Yasemin Fazlaca recently resigned from the CHP and joined the AKP. Following her switch to the new party, she drew attention with changes she made in her office. Fazlaca reduced the size of the Atatürk portrait in her office and replaced it with a portrait of AKP leader and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The move drew criticism even from within the AKP. According to a report by Veli Toprak of Sözcü, former AKP Yalova Provincial Chair Mustafa Pehlivan criticised Fazlaca's conduct, saying: "Are you that 'Fazlaca' [excessively] afraid of Atatürk? Prime ministers change, presidents change. The pictures of those people on the walls change too. But the founding values of this country and the place of Atatürk — who founded our Republic — in the hearts and lives of this nation never change. I hope your children will not be ashamed of you tomorrow. Fazlaca regards."
