Discomfort with DEM in the ruling coalition's junior partner: Asked 'What are you uncomfortable with?'

Great Unity Party (BBP) Chairman Mustafa Destici made significant statements regarding the current agenda during a press conference held at his party's headquarters. Stating that the consecutive forest fires during the summer months have plunged the country into deep sorrow, Destici warned that current measures remain insufficient.

Noting that while 10 firefighting planes and 50 helicopters were once considered sufficient, even 20-25 planes and 100 helicopters are not enough under today's conditions, Destici said, "Aerial intervention capacity must be increased according to climate conditions."

PROPOSAL FOR DEATH PENALTY FOR INTENTIONAL ARSON

Reminding that a large portion of forest fires occur as a result of intent or negligence, Destici emphasized that such acts are "inhumane." In this context, he stated that the death penalty, which they had previously demanded for child abuse and terrorism crimes, should now also apply to the crime of intentional forest arson.

Touching upon energy policies, Destici stated that foreign dependency is one of Turkey's biggest structural problems. Expressing that this issue lies at the root of the current account deficit and foreign trade deficit, the BBP leader listed his proposed solutions as follows:

“Emphasis should be placed on environmentally friendly energy sources such as solar, wind, and bioenergy. But at the same time, Turkey must also possess nuclear energy.”

Stating that climate change is a primary factor in forest fires, Destici evaluated Turkey's climate law as a positive step. However, he described the failure of the countries that pollute the world the most to take similar steps as "irresponsibility."

CRIMINAL AGE MUST BE LOWERED

Strongly condemning the murder of 14-year-old Mattia Ahmet Minguzzi in Kadıköy, Istanbul, Destici drew attention to the fact that children are being directed toward criminal organizations. Emphasizing that the state has sufficient power to combat these structures, Destici stated that the criminal responsibility of children over the age of 15 should be increased.

One of the most notable statements at the press conference was directed at DEM Party Group Deputy Chairperson Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit. Recalling the criticisms regarding the "Terror-Free Turkey" process, Destici stated that he did not understand the discomfort felt toward the name of the process.

“There is neither peace, nor a laying down of arms, nor a dissolution of the organization on the table. The fight against terrorism will continue until the end,” said Destici, noting that the process is ongoing and that he finds the debates conducted over the name to be insincere.
