ECHR ruling had become final: Date given for Selahattin Demirtaş's release
DEM Party Diyarbakır MP Cengiz Çandar stated that the release of former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş is imminent following the finalization of the ECHR ruling.
DEM Party MP Cengiz Çandar made notable remarks regarding the release process of Selahattin Demirtaş.
In a statement to journalist İrfan Aktan on the Spot Basın Kooperatifi YouTube channel, Çandar indicated that Demirtaş's release could take place in the near future, stating, "I have gained the impression that this release will take place within a few days." Çandar noted that this is not just his own personal view, but that this expectation has also formed among the public.
Addressing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's "judiciary state" remarks, Çandar criticized Turkey's legal system. Stating, "It would be more accurate to translate it as a state of law," Çandar expressed that the judiciary in Turkey does not present a "very encouraging" picture.
Recalling President Erdoğan's words, "This country is a country of the judiciary," Çandar said, "There is a process where the ECHR ruling must be implemented for Demirtaş's release." Çandar stated that following the ECHR's ruling that Demirtaş's detention was legally problematic, this decision must be forwarded to the Ankara 11th High Criminal Court and that the release could take place in the coming days.
Çandar emphasized that the ruling issued by the ECHR on July 8, 2025, has become final and that it found a legal problem with the decision regarding Demirtaş's detention. He stated that after the Ministry of Justice applied to the Grand Chamber of the ECHR, the ECHR rejected the request, thereby finalizing the ruling of human rights violations against Demirtaş.
Demirtaş's lawyers had filed for his release following the finalization of the ECHR's violation ruling. Çandar stated that after these developments, his release is near, and that this situation could even occur within hours.
MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli had stated that Demirtaş's legal process had concluded and that his release would be beneficial for Turkey. President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had also emphasized that they would accept the judiciary's decision, saying, "We will abide by whatever the judiciary says."
