Immunity threat against Özgür Özel: 'We must start with him first'

Former AKP MP Şamil Tayyar, in a statement made on TGRT Haber, claimed that some members of parliament are abusing their immunity shield and specifically called for the lifting of the immunity of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır.

ABUSE OF IMMUNITY CRITICIZED

Tayyar stated that immunity has now become a shield for insulting others and committing crimes. "Immunity has now been turned into a shield to insult people. Such a thing cannot be," said Tayyar, emphasizing that the system must take measures against such abuses.

The former AKP MP expressed that although the parliamentary agenda is busy, some files could be handled with priority. He noted that one of these files belongs to Ali Mahir Başarır.

Tayyar said, "If the parliament's agenda is not sufficient to handle all these files in terms of timing, we can pick one or two of them out with tweezers and take action to set an example for all MPs. One of these is Ali Mahir Başarır. I think he deserves this more than enough."

THREATENING WORDS FROM TAYYAR TOWARD BAŞARIR

Arguing that Ali Mahir Başarır's immunity should be lifted, Tayyar said, "This democratic system needs to lift this shield and bring him before the judiciary to be tried for his crimes. I think this will strengthen democracy. I never find it anti-democratic."

Stating that lifting Özel's immunity would be an important step, Tayyar remarked, "Actually, one should start with Özgür Özel, but after all, he is the chairman of the CHP, the leader of the main opposition; perhaps politically this could be evaluated as an overly extreme initiative."

Tayyar noted that lifting Özel's immunity could be considered a very ambitious step, adding, "If that is the case, one could start with his 'child.' To teach a lesson to the one he sees as his child, his friend, his very close associate, one could start with Ali Mahir Başarır."
