Ruling party MPs also want a strengthened parliamentary system: The presidential system problem

For years, opposition parties have argued that the presidential government system is the source of Turkey's fundamental problems. Now, ruling party MPs have also adopted this view.

The deepening economic crisis, the fact that Parliament functions like a "rubber stamp," and the gridlock in the legislative process have led members of the ruling party to join the opposition's criticisms. They, too, are now advocating for a return to a strengthened parliamentary system.

It is stated that although the Grand National Assembly of Turkey should be the center of democratic participation for citizens, it has become ineffective and no longer discusses projects beneficial to the country. It is noted that MPs have become detached from fulfilling the public's demands and remain distant from reforms that would change the course of things. Ruling party MPs have also begun to express their discomfort regarding the dysfunction of Parliament.

In Ankara's political circles, it is discussed that Parliament is experiencing gridlock, that the ruling party is attempting to correct past mistakes, and that it is trying to amend laws that the Constitutional Court has annulled. It is said that MPs are not included in legislative proposals and that the legislative process has been confined to a narrow space.

It is stated that AKP MPs often sign legislative proposals without knowing their content and participate in the process by saying, "They called from the group, so we went and signed."

Complaints from ruling party MPs regarding the Presidential Government System have also increased. The gridlock in the TBMM and the dysfunction of the legislative process highlight the shortcomings of the Presidential Government System.

AKP MPs state that the Presidential Government System has hollowed out public administration and caused laws to be passed in an incomplete or flawed manner. The view that a return to a 'strengthened parliamentary system' is necessary for a more robust legislative process is coming to the fore among AKP MPs.

AKP MPs argue that the Presidential Government System complicates problems rather than solving them. Finding the source of the economic crisis and democratic problems in this system, ruling party MPs express that a return to a strengthened parliamentary system is necessary as a solution.

According to what Babacan has conveyed, MPs express the necessity of transitioning to this system by recalling their "enthusiastic memories" of past periods.

It is stated that some MPs within the AKP have also made statements to the President regarding the return to a strengthened parliamentary system, saying, "We need to say that this is now a necessity."

Due to both the difficulties of coalitions and the problems brought about by the current system, the return to a parliamentary system is being voiced increasingly more in Ankara, and this demand is finding resonance within the ruling wing as well.
