Signals of a trustee appointment had come from the ruling wing... Action has been taken! What do CHP officials think about the trustee allegations?
Trustee allegations reaching the CHP Headquarters have prompted the party leadership to take action. Following reports that a trustee could be appointed by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the CHP leadership, which has decided to hold an extraordinary convention, aims to bring the process onto legal grounds with this step. What do party members think about the trustee allegations? Here are the details...
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel took quick action upon receiving this information. He announced that they had decided to hold an Extraordinary Convention on April 6.
Özel stated that the ruling power planned to cancel Sunday's primary election by appointing a trustee to the CHP by the end of the workday today, and that he made the convention decision to prevent this. So, how did this information reach the CHP, what happened afterwards, and what do the sources say?
Gökçer Tahincioğlu from T24 answered these questions. According to Tahincioğlu, reports from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office that a trustee could be appointed were influential in the decision to hold the convention. Tahincioğlu recounted what happened next as follows:
* Information was reflected in the public domain that the investigation file conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, which ordered the detention of İmamoğlu, also contained statements regarding the convention.
* In parallel with this, it was discussed in the lobbies that the statements of some secret witnesses, who directly stated that various offers were made in exchange for supporting Özel at the convention and that these offers were also made to them, were added to the file in Ankara.
* This information led the party leadership to take action on the need to hold an extraordinary convention as soon as possible. However, the decision was put on hold because the focus was on the İmamoğlu file and a portion of the party leadership, including Chairman Özel, was in Istanbul.
* According to the information received, the CHP leadership received information early this morning that a court decision would be served to the party around 17:00. Some sources conveyed to the headquarters that a trustee decision would be issued by the judgeship and that this decision would be served. Other sources informed the headquarters that there was preparation for the appointment of a trustee and that a letter would be sent requesting some information and documents from the party to be added to the file.
PROTEST BANS INCREASED CONCERNS
The fact that protest ban decisions from different cities arrived one after another at the CHP Headquarters also led to an alarm. Reports were received that the Ministry of Interior had verbally instructed governorates on March 23 not to set up ballot boxes in public spaces. It was assessed that the protest bans were also issued for this reason.
* The CHP leadership received information early in the morning that a court decision would be served to the party. Some sources warned that a trustee decision could be issued. Following these developments, the CHP leadership rapidly initiated the convention process.
LAWYERS RUSHED TO THE COURTHOUSE
* CHP lawyers kept watch at the Ankara Courthouse to learn about a possible trustee decision in advance. At the same time, the Central Executive Board (MYK) met and a decision was made to call for an extraordinary convention. The convention application was submitted to the Çankaya 4th District Election Board at 13:00.
* The agenda of the convention includes elections for the chairmanship, the Party Assembly, and the Disciplinary Board. According to Article 48 of the CHP Charter, the chairman can call for a convention within 15 days.
WHAT DOES THE CHP LEADERSHIP THINK?
* The CHP leadership argues that the possibility of a trustee has become legally invalid with the convention decision. However, it is stated that even if a trustee were appointed, this person would only have limited powers such as hanging the delegate list and determining the council. Former Supreme Court of Appeals Prosecutor Ömer Faruk Eminağaoğlu also recalled the Constitutional Court's 2005 decision and said, "A trustee to be appointed cannot cancel the convention decision."
At the same time, sources from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office provided information that there was no trustee decision that had been taken.
