Striking commentary on Bahçeli: 'The only move that could end the People's Alliance is in his hands'

Journalist Hakan Aygün, in his assessments regarding the current agenda, argued that MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli plays a critical role in Turkey's political balance. Aygün suggested that the most effective step that could lead to a change in government would be for Bahçeli to withdraw from the People's Alliance and call for early elections.

Stating that Bahçeli, who paved the way for early elections in the late 1990s by withdrawing his support for the Ecevit government, could put the current government in a difficult position with a similar move, Aygün said, "Even though the number of MHP deputies is no longer enough to create such effects, Bahçeli is in a position to pave the way for major changes with his political influence and specific weight."

Hakan Aygün expressed that the impact Bahçeli would create if he were to leave the People's Alliance could be more disruptive than the opposition line pursued by CHP leader Özgür Özel.

Aygün also drew attention to Bahçeli's words at his latest group meeting: "September 8 is the nullity case, September 9 is the anniversary of the founding of the CHP. Hopefully, the CHP will enter that day having pulled itself together." He argued that this message was a call for balance not only for the CHP but for Turkish politics as a whole.

Aygün stated that Devlet Bahçeli is not only the leader of the MHP but also the sole actor capable of establishing balance within the People's Alliance, saying, "Bahçeli has a position where he can adjust every side, especially his coalition partner. He is the only leader who possesses this balancing power. He can influence the future of Turkey not only politically but also psychologically."
