Details continue to emerge from the meeting between President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and US President Donald Trump.

At the NATO Summit, leaders agreed to contribute 5% of their GDP to defense under pressure from Trump. Erdoğan pledged to increase the 22.8 billion dollar defense budget to 70 billion dollars.

President Erdoğan was welcomed in a warm atmosphere at the NATO Summit in The Hague. He stood shoulder to shoulder with Trump in the family photo on the first night and chatted with leaders on the sidelines. However, the main topic of the day was the new defense spending target pushed by Trump. Turkey was allocating 2.09% of its GDP to NATO commitments with 22.8 billion dollars in defense spending in 2024.

With the new agreement, this rate will be increased to 5%. The Turkish economy, which grew by 3.2% last year, reached a volume of 1.4 trillion dollars in 2025. This means allocating 70 billion dollars to defense annually. The increase will bring a threefold burden to the budget. Meanwhile, Erdoğan said, "We discussed the F-35 issue. We have made a payment of 1 billion 300 million dollars for the F-35s, and we saw that Mr. Trump is also well-intentioned regarding the acquisition of the F-35s."
