Statement from Governor Gül on Sırrı Süreyya Önder! 'A serious surgery...'

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül answered questions from members of the press regarding the hospitalization and surgery of Deputy Speaker of the TBMM and DEM Party Istanbul MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder due to a heart condition.

In his statement in front of the hospital, Governor Gül said, "The emergency call came in at 22:10. Consequently, he was picked up by ambulance and brought to the hospital around 22:40. We arrived at the hospital around 22:50. Our Provincial Health Director, our hospital chief physician, our rector, and our medical staff have been intervening since the very first moment. He is currently in surgery. He has entered a surgery expected to last approximately 6-7 hours. Our professors will share the results of the surgery with you towards morning. From the very first moment of the incident, our President, our Speaker of Parliament, our Nationalist Movement Party Chairman, our Minister of Health, our Minister of Interior, AK Party Deputy Chairman Efkan Ala, and other state officials have been closely following the matter. After this stage, we need to pray and wait for the result of the surgery. We wish a speedy recovery to his loved ones and everyone. It is a serious surgery. Our doctors are in surgery. It may take 7-8 hours. Our doctors will share the result towards morning."

Provincial Health Director Abdullah Emre Güler stated, "We performed our intervention on Mr. Önder immediately following the first call. We carried out his transfer here because a great cardiac team was ready. He is currently in a major surgery. May God grant him healing, God willing. We have no choice but to wait and pray."

Hospital Rector Prof. Dr. Çavlan Çiftçi said regarding Önder's condition, "The surgery began around 23:30. Our entire cardiology team and cardiovascular surgery team were here. Unfortunately, the tearing of the largest main artery exiting the heart is life-threatening. It is a major surgery. It is one of our biggest surgeries among heart operations. Therefore, our patient's life is still in danger. The surgery is long, it will take 7-8 hours. Type 1 dissection is one of the largest types of dissection."
