Immunity on the agenda in the Turkish Parliament: 14 files for 12 deputies sent to the commission

In recent days, a total of 14 immunity files prepared against 12 deputies, including Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel, were submitted to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. These files have been placed on the agenda to be discussed by the Joint Committee. It was noted that there are two files each concerning Özgür Özel and CHP Erzincan Deputy Mustafa Sarıgül.

The files include allegations that, in connection with Antalya, certain CHP officials made financial demands from Muhittin Böcek regarding his candidacy for the Antalya Metropolitan Municipality. Furthermore, another file alleges, based on statements by Özkan Yalım, that CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and Veli Ağbaba interfered with the will of the delegates at the party's 38th Ordinary Congress, committing irregularities in the chairmanship elections.

AKP APPROACH: 'PRINCIPLED DECISION' IN EFFECT

According to information reported by the Türkiye newspaper, ruling party officials adopted a general stance regarding immunity files at the beginning of the new legislative term. Party strategists have taken the position that, with the exception of files involving crimes that cause significant public outcry—such as homicide, terrorism, and sexual offenses—the summaries of proceedings (fezlekeler) should not be brought to the Parliament's agenda.

AKP sources stated that there is a possibility of lifting immunity in cases involving serious crimes that cause public outrage. In the current situation, however, it was stated that no action is planned regarding the allegations contained in the files.
