Statement from Justice Minister Tunç on Mahir Polat! How is his health?
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç has made a statement regarding the health status of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat. Tunç stated, "The health status of the detained Mahir Polat, whose examinations and treatments have been carried out in full, is being closely monitored by physicians."
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has decided to refer Mahir Polat, the Deputy Secretary General of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) who is currently detained as part of a “terrorism” investigation into the municipality, to the Council of Forensic Medicine due to his health condition.
Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç stated in a post on his social media account regarding the matter that some comments made in the public sphere about Mahir Polat's health do not reflect the truth. In his statement, Minister Tunç included the following remarks:
“Some speculative posts and allegations are being brought to the agenda regarding the health status of İBB Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat, who is detained as part of the investigation conducted by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office.”
The statement continued by sharing information that Mahir Polat received medical care on March 29, 2025, following health complaints, and that his treatment is being conducted by specialist physicians:
“The health status of the detained Mahir Polat, who received initial intervention at the institution's clinic on March 29, 2025, following health complaints, and whose necessary examinations and treatments were subsequently carried out in full by specialist physicians at the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital, is being closely monitored by physicians.”

'REFERRAL TO THE COUNCIL OF FORENSIC MEDICINE WAS MADE BY HEALTH BOARD DECISION'
Minister Tunç announced that Polat's treatment continued at the Marmara Penal Execution Institution and that he was subsequently referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine for a health assessment:
“As of today, the aforementioned detainee was referred to the hospital at the Marmara Penal Execution Institutions Campus for the assessment of his health status, and it was decided to refer him to the Council of Forensic Medicine in accordance with the Health Board Decision taken following the examinations conducted there.”
'EVERY STAGE IS CONDUCTED WITH PHYSICIAN REPORTS'
At the end of the statement, it was emphasized that health services in penal execution institutions are provided under legal protection:
“In all these processes, all of the detainee's check-ups are carried out in full in accordance with the reports of the physicians performing his treatment. Allegations to the contrary do not reflect the truth. It is important to state that; access to health services for all detainees and convicts in penal execution institutions is meticulously provided within the framework of legal guarantees. There is no negligence or delay in this regard.”
