Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç calls for 'constitutional guarantee for headscarves'

A phone call that has entered the political agenda has reignited debates over a new constitution. Following a conversation between AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş during an AKP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting, Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç made notable statements.

PHONE CALL FROM ERDOĞAN

While it was reported that AKP Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş was targeted due to her attire, it was learned that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called Güneş on the phone. It was conveyed that during the conversation, which took place while the AKP MYK meeting was ongoing, Erdoğan addressed Güneş with the following remarks:

“You are coming to our group meeting on Wednesday with 100 women. You are coming in all white; you are already fair-skinned. But you have now made a revolutionary change. Look at what they are saying? They are saying, ‘Bring this civil constitution and save us from these issues.’ My daughter, we are already doing our best to save us from the coup constitution. We are working on it right now. Hopefully, we will succeed in that too. But of course, Mihalgazi will have achieved this. Together, hopefully. We are currently in the MYK meeting, and all your friends send their greetings. They are all praying for you.”

FOOTAGE SHARED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

After the footage of the phone call between Erdoğan and Güneş began circulating on social media, Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç also made a statement regarding the matter. Tunç shared the footage in question on his X account and provided an assessment.

TUNÇ EMPHASIZES NEW CONSTITUTION

Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç included the following statements in his post:

“The words of our Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş, who was insulted due to her attire and with whom our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone during the MYK meeting, saying ‘Bring the Civil Constitution and save us from such injustices,’ reveal our nation’s common demand and expectation in its simplest form. Our Mayor Zeynep is absolutely right. A new, civil, and democratic constitution is our most important responsibility and debt to our noble nation.”

“HEADSCARVES MUST BE UNDER CONSTITUTIONAL GUARANTEE”

In the continuation of his statement, Tunç continued his assessments regarding the need for a new constitution. Stating that the coup-plotting and tutelary spirit of the current constitution has been largely weakened by reforms made over the last 23 years, Tunç indicated that the way to permanently eliminate this is through a new constitution.

Tunç included the following statements in his announcement:

“Although we have largely weakened the coup-plotting and tutelary spirit of the Constitution with reforms that were in the nature of a silent revolution under the leadership of our President over the last 23 years, the way to permanently eliminate this is through a new and democratic constitution written not by coup plotters but by the representatives of our noble nation, and one that our nation has said ‘yes’ to with its white votes. Of course, this constitution must also include regulations that guarantee fundamental rights and freedoms, do not marginalize anyone, clearly decree that benefiting from all rights cannot be tied to whether any woman’s head is covered or uncovered, and provide a constitutional guarantee for headscarves.”
