Lawsuit had been filed for throwing a phone at the President: Will be tried in two separate cases

An unexpected incident occurred during the speech delivered by President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the opening of the Bağcılar Maternity and Children's Hospital on April 19, 2025. N.K., a 44-year-old textile worker attending the ceremony, threw his mobile phone toward the stage where President Erdoğan was located after unfurling a banner. N.K., who was detained following the incident, was arrested by the court and sent to prison.

INDICTMENT PREPARED FOR TWO DIFFERENT CRIMES

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has prepared two separate indictments against N.K. for two different charges.

The first indictment was prepared on the charge of "physical assault against the President" and was accepted by the Istanbul 28th High Criminal Court. The first hearing of this case will be held on September 23, 2025.

The second indictment includes the charge of "insulting the President." This file was submitted to the Bakırköy 44th Criminal Court of First Instance and was accepted. The first hearing of the insult case will take place on July 16, 2025.

The crime of "physical assault against the President" is among the acts requiring heavy penalties under the Turkish Penal Code. According to experts, N.K.'s act of throwing a phone toward the stage was evaluated as "physical assault" on the grounds that the action reached the dimension of a physical threat.

On the other hand, the crime of "insulting the President" carries a prison sentence of 1 to 4 years.
