Mansur Yavaş's 'How a city is murdered' series continues

Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş has published the third installment of the post series he launched on his social media account titled "How a City is Murdered." This time, his target was the Ovacık neighborhood in the Keçiören district. Yavaş explained how the changes to floor limits in the region have damaged Ankara's approach to urban planning.

FROM 3 FLOORS TO 40 FLOORS IN OVACIK: "FLOORS ROSE, THE FUTURE VANISHED"

Yavaş also shared a video prepared regarding the Ovacık region that reveals the area's unplanned urbanization, using the following expressions:

“This is Ovacık. The 3 to 5-floor construction limit envisioned for this region in 1998 was practically demolished by a revision made during the previous administration in 2011. First, it was increased to a minimum of 8 floors, and subsequently, permits were granted for buildings up to 40 floors.”

Yavaş described the concrete sprawl resulting from the floor increases as the "product of zoning plan changes made for the sake of rent-seeking."

"THE CITY'S FUTURE IS BEING DESTROYED"

The ABB Mayor emphasized that the zoning changes made were more focused on rent-seeking than urban planning, stating:

“Today, these buildings rising in Ovacık are the result of those plan changes made for the sake of rent. This is not an urban planning scheme; it is a rent-seeking project that destroys the city's future.”

In similar posts he has made previously, Mansur Yavaş had drawn attention to how the zoning changes made during the AKP era destroyed green spaces and the natural structure in Ankara.
