WILL BAHÇELİ CALL FOR AN "EARLY ELECTION"?
Speculation has emerged that Bahçeli might speak about an "early election." Speaking to Halk TV, CHP Ankara Deputy Umut Akdoğan stated, "Whenever Bahçeli is about to make a statement, the first thing that comes to everyone's mind is an 'early election.' I hope I am wrong, but I do not expect it."
Bahçeli has recently been in the spotlight following visits from Free Syrian Army (FSA) commanders to him, and subsequently to organized crime leader Alaattin Çakıcı. Another meeting involving the MHP leader that drew public backlash was his visit on July 15 to the Special Operations Department, which was bombed during the coup attempt and where 51 police officers were martyred. Special Operations Chief Süleyman Karadeniz kissing Bahçeli's hand during the visit sparked controversy.
The MHP has most recently been in the news again regarding the trial for the murder of former Ülkü Ocakları Chairman Sinan Ateş. It was revealed that in its petition to intervene in the case, the MHP filed complaints against more than a hundred individuals, including journalists and party leaders.
Cumhuriyet columnist Barış Terkoğlu wrote that the MHP, which requested to join the Sinan Ateş trial as a "party harmed by the crime," listed 154 names in its application petition and requested that they be summoned to court. Among the names the MHP requested to have their statements taken are CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, İYİ Party Chairman Müsavat Dervişoğlu, Future Party Chairman Ahmet Davutoğlu, Victory Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ, DEVA Party Chairman Ali Babacan, TİP Chairman Erkan Baş, as well as numerous journalists, legal experts, and academics.
