A legislative proposal, which has been accepted by the Public Works and Reconstruction Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and is expected to be addressed in the General Assembly in the coming days, introduces a new regulation for municipalities.

According to the report by Sözcü, if the proposal becomes law, municipalities will no longer be able to establish any company or cooperative without the permission of the President.

IF THE PROPOSAL IS ACCEPTED, CHP WILL GO TO THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

The Republican People's Party (CHP), which opposes the regulation in question, noted that this step is aimed at restricting the ability of municipalities managed by opposition parties to provide services to citizens. CHP officials state that if the proposal is accepted in Parliament, they will take the matter to the Constitutional Court.

Following recent changes to the powers and audit principles of municipalities, as well as the implementation of trustees, an important regulation regarding the economic initiatives of municipalities is now on the agenda. Opposition administrations state that these practices increase the central government's control over local administrations.

The legal process for the proposal is expected to be completed next week.
