Murat Kurum responds to 'Kanal Istanbul' question! Will the project continue if he is elected?
Murat Kurum, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) mayoral candidate for the People's Alliance formed by the AKP and MHP, made a statement regarding the Kanal Istanbul Project, which has drawn public criticism.
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) mayoral candidate Murat Kurum answered questions from journalists in Güngören as part of his local election campaign.
When asked by a journalist, "Your statement in a television program last night that the number of people who lost their lives due to earthquakes was 130,000 caused confusion. Did you mean the number of people who lost their lives in the February 6 earthquakes with this figure?" Kurum replied that in yesterday's television program, as well as in other programs he had attended previously, he had stated that the number of citizens who lost their lives in earthquakes in Turkey over the last century had reached 130,000, and that 50,000 people had lost their lives in the most recent 'disaster of the century'.
RESPONSE TO KANAL ISTANBUL QUESTION
Regarding the question of whether the Kanal Istanbul Project would continue if he were elected IMM mayor, Kurum gave the following response:
"Actually, these are unfortunately scenarios created through agencies by the current administration, by those who do not care about Istanbul, who do not find solutions to Istanbul's problems, and who do not eliminate Istanbul's transportation ordeal or earthquake risk. We will not be a party to these scenarios. What have we said since the first day? We said we would deal with Istanbul's problems and focus on that. These are games played by those whose agenda is not Istanbul, by creating the same scenarios again with the rhetoric that 'the Kanal Istanbul project is a betrayal of Istanbul.' These are political scenarios. We are aware of these scenarios. The people of Istanbul are aware of these scenarios. That is why we always say: No work that is not on Istanbul's agenda will be on our agenda either. We want those who create this scenario to look in the mirror. We know they are not sincere. Whatever Istanbul's problems are, whatever the urgent, priority tasks and issues are, we will focus on them."
