New indictment against Ekrem İmamoğlu! Up to 4 years in prison requested
An indictment prepared against the imprisoned Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu on charges of 'insulting a public official due to their duty' has been accepted. It is alleged that İmamoğlu's statements regarding the prosecutors exceeded the limits of defense, and a prison sentence of 9 months to 4 years and 1 month has been requested.
A new indictment has been prepared against Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was arrested and removed from office as part of investigations into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. It is requested that İmamoğlu be sentenced to between 9 months and 4 years and 1 month in prison for allegedly making insulting statements against two public prosecutors who requested his arrest on March 23 on charges of "aiding the PKK armed terrorist organization."
In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Press Crimes Investigation Bureau, the 2 public prosecutors are listed as "complainants."
ALLEGED THAT HIS STATEMENTS EXCEEDED THE LIMITS OF THE RIGHT TO DEFENSE
The indictment recalls that İmamoğlu was referred to the criminal judgeship of peace with a request for his arrest after giving his statement at the prosecutor's office on March 23 as part of an investigation conducted for the crime of "aiding an armed terrorist organization." It was noted that an investigation was launched due to the insulting statements İmamoğlu made during his interrogation at the judgeship against the two public prosecutors whose names appeared in the arrest referral document.
The indictment, which includes İmamoğlu's statement to the judgeship, claims that his statements in question exceeded the limits of the right to defense and were of a nature to offend honor and dignity.

İMAMOĞLU EMPHASIZED CRITICISM ON BEHALF OF THE PUBLIC IN HIS DEFENSE
The indictment states that in the investigation conducted for the crime of "insulting a public official due to their duty," the statement of İmamoğlu, who is being held at the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution, was taken via the Audio and Video Information System (SEGBİS). It is noted that İmamoğlu, who did not accept the charges, stated that he did not insult the individuals' families, private lives, or honor, but rather offered criticism on behalf of the public.
INDICTMENT ACCEPTED
The indictment requests that İmamoğlu be sentenced to 9 months to 4 years and 1 month in prison for the crime of "insulting a public official due to their duty," and also requests the application of the "deprivation of certain rights" provision found in Article 53 of the Turkish Penal Code.
The indictment has been accepted by the Istanbul criminal court of first instance.
