Number of MPs in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey drops to 592

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey began this legislative term with 600 members of parliament. However, this number has decreased due to reasons such as deaths, MPs being elected as mayors, and the revocation of Can Atalay's parliamentary status.

Most recently, with the passing of DEM Party Istanbul MP and Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly Sırrı Süreyya Önder, the number of MPs has fallen to 592. The DEM Party will elect a new Deputy Speaker of the Assembly to replace Önder.

In the past, Saadet Party Kocaeli MP Hasan Bitmez passed away on December 14, 2023, after falling ill while delivering a speech in the General Assembly. This event had reduced the number of MPs to 599.

The parliamentary status of Workers' Party of Turkey (TİP) Hatay MP Can Atalay had ended following a conviction ruling and its confirmation by the Court of Cassation.

Additionally, Hasan Baltacı, Abdurrahman Tutdere, Ahmet Önal, and Burcu Köksal from the CHP resigned from their parliamentary seats after being elected as mayors.

With the appointment of AKP's Murat Kurum as the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, the number of MPs in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey had previously dropped to 593.
