Özel's criticism of the government: 'They cannot produce solutions, they are looking for scapegoats'
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel spoke at the Social Democratic Municipalism Coordination Council Meeting. Evaluating forest fires and earthquake preparations, Özel stated that the government is looking for scapegoats instead of solving problems.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel spoke at the Social Democratic Municipalism Coordination Council Meeting.
Key highlights from Özel's speech are as follows:
THEY CANNOT PRODUCE SOLUTIONS
"We will evaluate the areas where the central government falls short in producing solutions.
Together with the efforts of our friends who have been working diligently since the day they were elected, the CHP is fulfilling its duty.
There is a malicious mind trying to corner the CHP with various audits. Everyone knows that we have come out of tens of thousands of audits with our heads held high.
We have 412 mayors in the field, and since it is difficult to bring these mayors together, we will be in a meeting where we discuss what we have done and how to increase what we will do."
Stating that there is a new participation in the CHP, Özel introduced IYI Party Adana Deputy Bilal Binici, who resigned from his party, as having rejoined the CHP. Özel pinned the CHP badge on Binici.
FOREST FIRES
"Let alone new powers, they are not meeting the needs of the municipality's firefighting personnel.
We saw the reactions of those who are after rent in the fight against fires. Those responsible tried to smear our municipalities. Our nation reacted.
We are doing more than just pointing out the government's mistakes. The criticisms regarding the weakness of the fleet are clear. Some are still looking for ways to blame the municipality. We will say what needs to be done. But if the government continues the same method, we will complain about this to the nation.
Can there be austerity in fighting fires? What are you achieving by not signing that document? You are blaming our municipalities. You can blame us if you give us what we ask for to prevent fires. They need to fulfill our demands and apologize.
Firefighting units should be trained and kept ready within the TSK (Turkish Armed Forces) in the region where forest fires occur.''
I HAD SUGGESTED TO ERDOĞAN TO ESTABLISH A MINISTRY OF EARTHQUAKES
''This is not a matter of central or local government. In my meeting with Mr. Erdoğan, I had suggested that he establish a "Ministry of Earthquakes" and include someone from every party in the ministry. He said they would evaluate it.
A ministry of earthquakes must be established. Those who do not do what is necessary in this regard are also not approving urban transformation projects.
We will discuss what CHP municipalities will do regarding earthquakes by forming an earthquake science board and with the contributions to be made from here. From now on, we will speak more and make more demands.''
WE CANNOT DIGEST BEING IN THE LOWER RANKS AT THE OLYMPICS
''Let's come to the other topic, we followed the 2024 Paris Olympic Games together with our mayors. We returned from Paris with our heads bowed, we returned without winning a gold medal. We congratulate our athletes once again separately.
But we never digest being in the lower ranks at the Olympics.''
ISTANBUL IS A CANDIDATE FOR 2036
''Istanbul is a candidate for the 2036 Olympics in Istanbul. We tried to promote Istanbul and Turkey with the Istanbul House. The world understood, some in Turkey had a stomach ache.
We will focus on the agenda of earthquakes, forest fires, and the Olympics today."
'WE SHED BLOOD IN PARLIAMENT'
"My tongue does not want to say it, but we shed blood on the stairs of Parliament, violence against women was involved. Those who consider it a skill not to let a deputy speak cast a shadow. We were ashamed. We are ashamed of those who made the parliament experience that day. It is clear that they will not sit down and talk. Mr. Numan, we are calling Parliament back into session. I am addressing Kurtulmuş, who said he would act impartially on the day he was elected. There have been many shortcomings until today.
The Constitution says: Constitutional court decisions are binding. We know you have been under a lot of pressure. We are calling Parliament back into session. Not to negotiate. To read the decision. If you do this, we will believe that you are independent of the Palace.
We will call Parliament to meet again and we will see what state this matter has come to.
FARMER CRISIS
Every one of the young farmers is content with the minimum wage and is looking for work. As the CHP, we are helping with all our means. We are buying the remaining products and delivering them to those in need.
We care about the spontaneous rebellions of farmers that emerged in Burdur, Balıkesir, and Kahramanmaraş, and their making this voice heard on the streets."
