Özgür Özel reacts to house arrest decision in 'Newborn Gang' investigation: 'Unacceptable'

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel has reacted to the detention of lawyer İrem Çiçek and journalists Dinçer Gökçe and Nilay Can as part of the "Newborn Gang" investigation. The detention procedures targeting the editorial directors of various news websites were also criticized.

In the investigation conducted by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that lawyer İrem Çiçek was detained following her applications to intervene in the case. Evaluating the house arrest decision given to lawyer Çiçek, Özel stated that the prosecutor's office was interfering with developments and allegations reflected in the press regarding this matter.

The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into journalists who reported on allegations that the prosecutor conducting the "Newborn Gang" investigation had been "removed from the case." In this context, journalists Dinçer Gökçe and Nilay Can were detained, while İrem Çiçek was summoned to provide a statement.

Following the investigation, Dinçer Gökçe and Nilay Can were released under judicial control conditions. However, lawyer İrem Çiçek was sentenced to house arrest.

REACTION FROM ÖZEL

CHP leader Özgür Özel stated in a post on his social media account that this decision should be reviewed, noting the following:

"The methods used to detain lawyer İrem Çiçek and some journalists today, as well as the judicial control decisions issued against them, are not in accordance with the law or conscience. The house arrest decision given to İrem Çiçek, who has a request to intervene in the case regarding the Newborn Gang, is unacceptable as it will affect the file and the hearing on November 18; it must be re-evaluated."
