Özgür Özel's 'alliance' and 'Istanbul' statement: 'It will be reflected in the party congress'

CHP chairmanship candidate and Group Deputy Chairman Özgür Özel made evaluations regarding the party congress election and alliances.

"THE CURRENT MANAGEMENT PREFERRED TO ACT AS IF THERE WAS NO ELECTION DEFEAT"

Responding to questions from Hürriyet, Özel said the following:

“I became a member of parliament in 2011. Since 2015, I have been attending Central Executive Board (MYK) and Party Assembly meetings in my capacity as group deputy chairman. I have the right to speak at these meetings, but I do not have the right to vote. I objected to some of the party's policies that caused discomfort in closed meetings. However, since I did not open my party to debate in public, I do not want it to be thought that I approved of or was involved in all of the determined policies. Of course, Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu is not the sole person responsible for the mistakes, shortcomings, and defeats. However, this admission should not obscure the fact that he is responsible at the highest level. I have apologized profusely for any faults that fall on me. However, the current management preferred to act as if nothing had happened after the election defeat, and even to act as if there had been no election defeat at all.

HE REMINDED OF ECEVIT

If a leadership candidate or an alternative is to emerge in our party, they will not fall like a meteor, they will not come out of a cargo shipment, and they will not be produced in a laboratory. It will happen when one of the party's existing cadres, one of its own children, someone known and trusted by the party public, puts forward a claim. I would like to remind you that our 3rd Chairman Ecevit undertook the duties of MP, minister, and secretary-general under the chairmanship of İsmet İnönü between 1957 and 1972, and came to the chairmanship after 15 years of parliamentary experience.”

Stating, “I don't even let the thought of failure cross my mind. However, I wholeheartedly believe that a chairman who cannot carry Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's party to power should not remain in that seat,” Özel said, “If I had been the addressee of today's demands for change after the election we went through, I would have preferred to take the party to an extraordinary congress without thinking for a moment. In the provincial congresses I attended and the visits I made, I saw that there is a prevailing opinion among our party members that I have more than fulfilled the requirements of my duty regarding my own area of responsibility.”

ALLIANCE MESSAGE

Özel also said, “I think that not forming an alliance and causing each other to lose would be hara-kiri. A change in leadership will create opportunities in this regard. We are weaving a process where alliances that can be established at the local level can be supported from the general level.”
