Özgür Özel's reaction to Erdoğan regarding Maduro: 'Erdoğan used to call him brother Maduro, but he couldn't say a single word'

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel harshly criticized President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in his statements following the US operation against Venezuela and the removal of President Nicolás Maduro from the country. Özel criticized Erdoğan for remaining silent on Trump's 'abduction' of Maduro, despite having previously supported him.

"ERDOĞAN DID NOT CALL MADURO OUT WHEN HE WAS WRONG"

In his speech regarding the developments in Venezuela, Özel said: "When Maduro did not hold fair and secure elections and did not listen to the opposition, he was in the wrong. Erdoğan used to call him 'my brother Maduro.' Today, he has not been able to say a single word against the coup by Trump—whose every word Erdoğan swallows and remains silent before—or against the abduction of Maduro. Let everyone see that Erdoğan could not call wrong, wrong, even when Maduro was in the wrong."

"THE US HAS UPENDED THE UN, ERDOĞAN IS SILENT"

The CHP leader stated, "The wrong done to Venezuela today is the US upending the UN system and trampling on a 400-year-old rule. Yet, Erdoğan has not been able to say a word." Özel continued his criticism of Erdoğan with these words: "Erdoğan is a politician who fears Trump, seeks legitimacy in the Oval Office, eats his own words when cornered, and lacks courage."

Following Özel's statements, relations between Venezuela and Turkey also became a topic of discussion. After President Erdoğan's re-election in the 2023 elections, Maduro was one of the first world leaders to congratulate Erdoğan and attended his inauguration ceremony in Ankara. Turkey was one of the few countries to recognize the 2024 elections, and Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy attended Maduro's inauguration ceremony.
