President and AKP Chair Erdoğan on 'opportunism': 'We will impose heavy sanctions'

President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke at the 26th Traditional Consumer Awards Summit. Erdoğan made statements regarding 'exorbitant prices' and 'opportunism' in vehicles and housing.

Erdoğan said the following:

'INFLATION HAD A NEGATIVE IMPACT'

"Despite pressure from the opposition, we avoided impulsive steps in the economy. We ensured that the wheels kept turning without interruption. We showed the same attitude during the global economic crisis triggered by the Russia-Ukraine war. We implemented an economic model based on growing our country. Inflation rates, which reached their highest levels in the last 60-70 years worldwide, also affected us negatively. They still do.

"WE WILL NOT GIVE THEM ANY BREATHING ROOM"

When pricing behaviors stemming entirely from opportunism were added, our burden increased even further. We saw exorbitant figures that could not be explained by any economic justification. We encountered greedy people who targeted the bread of our citizens. One of the priorities of our new cabinet was to deflate this bubble. With the decisive steps we have taken, we have made significant progress in many areas, starting with car prices. Thanks to the measures taken and the fines imposed, speculative price increases in the automotive market have begun to disappear. While prices were constantly rising due to a supposed vehicle shortage, today we are now talking about discounts and campaigns. We believe that a similar situation will occur in housing and rental prices. We will impose heavy sanctions on individuals and institutions that cause exorbitant price increases. We will not give them any breathing room."
