President Erdoğan heads to Russia for BRICS summit: Critical meeting with Putin

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will travel to Kazan, the capital of Tatarstan, tomorrow to attend the 16th BRICS Summit. The summit will take place between October 22-24, and Erdoğan will hold an important meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

IT HAD BEEN STATED THAT TURKEY HAD APPLIED

The US-based news site Bloomberg had claimed that Turkey had officially applied to join BRICS. In the report signed by Selcan Hacaoğlu and Fırat Kozok, it was stated that Turkey took this step due to the lack of progress in its efforts to join the European Union.

NATURAL GAS HUB ON THE AGENDA

Russian Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov provided information about the meeting between Erdoğan and Putin at a press conference held before the BRICS Summit. Ushakov said, "Putin and Erdoğan will meet in Kazan on October 23. The leaders will discuss the natural gas hub planned to be established in Turkey."

BRICS DOORS ARE OPEN

In a previous statement to reporters, Ushakov stated that the doors of BRICS are open to countries that share the basic principles of the union, saying, "The doors of BRICS are open to like-minded states that share the basic principles and goals of the union."

Erdoğan's visit to Russia and his participation in the BRICS Summit stand out as an important agenda item in terms of Turkey's energy policies and international cooperation.

WHAT TOPICS ARE ON THE AGENDA?

Russian President Putin announced in his speech at the BRICS Business Forum held in Moscow on October 18 that, in addition to expansion, the issue of a new international payment system would also be on the agenda. Putin stated that the process of creating a common currency within BRICS has not yet matured.

The Russia-Ukraine War, which began in February 2022, is expected to be one of the main items on the agenda, especially in the meetings Putin will hold.
