Proposal to 'investigate children missing in earthquakes' rejected by AKP and MHP votes

The IYI Party's research motion regarding children missing in the earthquakes was discussed today in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly.

The motion requested the identification of citizens who went missing in the rubble, the verification of information announced by the ministry, and a comprehensive evaluation of allegations regarding child abduction.

"A LEGAL PROCESS MUST BE INITIATED"

Explaining the justification for the proposal, IYI Party Antalya Deputy Aykut Kaya stated, "We expect these missing persons cases from both the 1999 and February 6 earthquakes to be investigated and concluded with the seriousness befitting the greatness of the Republic of Turkey. If we, as a state, cannot physically find our missing persons, a legal process regarding the disappearance of these individuals or children must be initiated immediately thereafter."

Stating that the demands of the families of the missing have not been met, DEM Party Kocaeli Deputy Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu said, "In a week or two, we will all be in this Parliament giving speeches about the 'earthquake,' but the government officials still do not hear the voices of the families."

Speaking on behalf of the CHP, Hatay Deputy Nermin Yıldırım asked, "Is this not an issue that hurts our conscience? Why are we not establishing a working group for this?"

In the vote held after the discussions, the proposal was rejected by the votes of AKP and MHP deputies.
