Reaction from Özgür Özel regarding Murat Çalık
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel visited politicians imprisoned in İzmir and reiterated his demands for justice. He expressed his concerns regarding the health condition of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel visited politicians held in İzmir Buca Prison. Speaking to members of the press after the visit, Özel commented on the investigations in İzmir and the situation of the imprisoned politicians.
Regarding the investigations into the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, Özel stated, "I had previously made two important statements regarding the cases in which Tunç Soyer and his colleagues are being tried in İzmir. We had said that if there is a fair trial process, we will speak accordingly. There are two investigations in İzmir; the hearing for one is in November, and none of our colleagues are imprisoned."
Touching upon the issue of cooperatives, Özel said, "Cooperativism is not a crime. A system that enables people who could not afford a home even if they worked for a thousand years to become homeowners is not a crime. We interpret the cooperativism issue in İzmir as a correct endeavor and the process being experienced as a misfortune."
Özel also expressed his concerns regarding the health condition of Beylikdüzü Mayor Mehmet Murat Çalık. He stated, "We do not accept Mehmet Murat Çalık being kept inside for political reasons. He is not a convict, and his 'crime' remains to be proven. It is certain that he will be acquitted, but who can answer what will happen if his illness recurs?"
Furthermore, explaining his stance regarding political parties, Özel said, "At no point in my life have I demonized a political party or those who vote for it. We will continue with this responsibility and consistency." While reiterating his demands for justice, Özel emphasized that the CHP offers a model that will produce solutions to problems.
