Scandalous decision at Hacettepe: Students who participated in protests expelled from dorms!

It has been learned that some students staying at the Hacettepe University student dormitory were expelled from the dorms on the grounds that they participated in protests that began following the operation carried out against the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) on March 19.

The official notices sent to the students included the allegation that they had "participated in unauthorized actions." However, not only were the students not given the opportunity to provide a defense, but no investigation was conducted regarding them either.

YURDUM CAFE CRISIS

The students in question had also reacted last November to the decision to move up the closing hours of "Yurdum Cafe," the only social living space on the Hacettepe University campus.

The students, who organized sit-in protests between 10:00 PM and 1:00 AM from November 11 to November 22, 2024, had demanded that the cafe remain open at night. It was pointed out that Yurdum Cafe was the only space where both students studying and thousands of young people could socialize. However, after some time had passed, four students had their ties to the dormitory severed on the grounds that they had participated in these actions.

Sol Genc, the youth organization of the Left Party (Sol Parti), reacted harshly to the expulsion of the students from the dorms. The statement made via social media included the following remarks:

"They are trying to punish the youth who defended their future on March 19 by attacking their right to housing! Four of our friends studying at Hacettepe University were expelled from their dorms on trumped-up charges because they defended their rights. We do not accept the regime, which leaves no housing opportunities for the youth with its anti-people policies, punishing our friends by targeting their lives. We have torn down your walls of fear; now it is the turn of your reign!"
