She had climbed the bridge to hang a banner for İmamoğlu: Nimet Özdemir has joined the AKP ranks

Istanbul MP Nimet Özdemir, who has made headlines with notable party changes in her political career over the last three years, took part in the AKP Group Meeting at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) as part of the process of joining the AKP.

President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the AKP badge on Özdemir.

SHE HAD MOVED FROM THE İYİ PARTY TO THE CHP

Nimet Özdemir entered the Grand National Assembly of Turkey as an Istanbul MP for the İYİ Party in the 2023 General Elections.

Resigning from the İYİ Party in July 2024, Özdemir joined the CHP following the party convention process and the election of Özgür Özel as chairman. Özdemir's CHP badge had been pinned on her at a ceremony attended by the party leadership.

SHE RESIGNED FROM THE CHP ON JUNE 17

Özdemir, whose political career in the CHP lasted approximately two years, announced that she had resigned from the party on June 17, 2026.

While there was public curiosity about what political path she would follow after her resignation, her new destination became clear with her joining the ranks of the AKP.

3 DIFFERENT PARTIES IN 3 YEARS

With her joining the AKP, Nimet Özdemir has served in three different political parties over the last three-year period.

Elected as an MP from the İYİ Party in 2023, Özdemir later moved to the CHP, and after leaving the CHP, she decided to join the AKP.

SHE HAD MADE HEADLINES WITH A "FREE İMAMOĞLU" BANNER

Istanbul MP Nimet Özdemir had made headlines last year with an action she took following the imposition of restrictions on the use of images, audio, and posters of Ekrem İmamoğlu on public transport vehicles.

Özdemir had hung a banner on the Bosphorus Bridge featuring the words "Free İmamoğlu".
