Slogan on Erdoğan's posters turns out to belong to imprisoned mayor! 'My father's words are on the billboards, he himself is in jail'

The removal of Ekrem İmamoğlu's posters from billboards along Istanbul's E-5 highway and their replacement with large-scale visuals of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sparked controversy. The claim that the slogan on Erdoğan's posters, 'Our name is brotherhood, our surname is Turkey,' belongs to Esenyurt Mayor Ahmet Özer, who was arrested on charges of PKK membership, has brought a new polemic to the agenda. Özer's family reacted to the situation, stating, 'What a bitter contradiction this is.'

Slogan on Erdoğan's posters turns out to belong to imprisoned mayor! 'My father's words are on the billboards, he himself is in jail'

After Ekrem İmamoğlu's posters were removed from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) billboards on the E-5, one of Istanbul's busiest roads, posters featuring large-scale photos of AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the message "Our name is brotherhood, our surname is Turkey" were put up in their place.

This change on the billboards began following the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office's decision to remove visuals featuring Ekrem İmamoğlu. This situation came after the seizure of 24 companies, including 12 advertising agencies operating in Istanbul and other major cities, as part of investigations into the IMM.

"OUR NAME IS BROTHERHOOD, OUR SURNAME IS TURKEY"

It has emerged that the "Our name is brotherhood, our surname is Turkey" slogan featured on Erdoğan's posters belongs to Prof. Dr. Ahmet Özer, the CHP's Esenyurt Mayor, who was arrested on October 30 on charges of PKK membership and replaced by a government-appointed trustee. Ahmet Özer's daughter and lawyer, Seraf Özer, reacted to this situation with a written statement.

"WHAT A BITTER CONTRADICTION"

Özer stated the following:

"As my father said in his historic defense on May 23, a peace process is being managed today using methods that my father proposed in the Turkish Grand National Assembly years ago, and which he also supports. Indeed, in the October 2024 assembly and one day before his arrest, on October 29 Republic Day, he used the phrase 'Even if our names are different, our surname is Turkey' in front of tens of thousands. These words belong to my precious father, and this historic quote of his was used on all the banners during our democracy vigil in Esenyurt. Likewise, my father's motto for Esenyurt was 'Esenyurt, City of Peace and Brotherhood.' However, the owner of these words is in prison today, while those managing the process are conducting it by utilizing my father's words and ideas, adorning all of Istanbul with words that belong to him. This situation reveals what we call 'what a bitter contradiction.' They cannot convince anyone of social peace where there is no justice. I hope they blend the 'brotherhood' they have adorned all of Istanbul with, with justice."
