Statement from Mahmut Tanal regarding detained students

CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal made a statement on his social media account regarding the status of students detained in Ankara. Tanal shared details about the process, noting that 70 people had been taken into custody.

According to the information provided by Tanal, 35 of the 70 detained individuals have been released. While 17 people were referred to the prosecutor's office, arrest was requested for 10 individuals and judicial control was requested for 7.

Regarding the 18 people brought in from the Counter-Terrorism Branch, 6 were brought before the court with a request for arrest, and 12 were released under judicial control conditions. Of the 6 people brought to court, 3 were arrested, and 3 were sentenced to house arrest.

As a result, only 3 of the 70 people detained were arrested.

Stating that the detentions lacked legal basis, Mahmut Tanal used the following expressions:

“The vast majority of these detentions carried out in Ankara are not legal; they are entirely for the purpose of pressure and intimidation. Article 19 of the Constitution is clear: There can be no arrest without evidence. The presumption of innocence cannot be violated. The law applies to everyone!”
