Striking 'early election' statement from the Palace! 'Based on the local elections...'
Mehmet Uçum, Chief Advisor to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, has responded to the 'early election' discussions that began following the unofficial local election results. Uçum stated, "It is never possible to generate demands based on local elections in terms of the presidential system."
Turkey has left behind the March 31 Local Elections, in which the Republican People's Party (CHP) saw a rise across the country.
According to unofficial results, the Republican People's Party (CHP) received 37.74 percent of the vote, becoming the leading party across Turkey. The AKP placed second with 35.49 percent.
Following the election results where the CHP declared victory, an assessment came from the Palace.
Mehmet Uçum, Chief Advisor to AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, responded to the "early election" messages.
Sharing a post on his social media account, Uçum stated, "While the issue of the impact of local elections on general elections is only addressed in extremely extraordinary situations even in a parliamentary system, thinking that such an effect would occur in a presidential system is nothing more than wishful thinking."
Mehmet Uçum included the following statements in his explanation:
"WE WILL SEE WHETHER THE OPPOSITION WILL FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE TASK GIVEN BY THE PEOPLE"
"May our March 31, 2024 Local Elections be auspicious for our entire country. Despite all external and internal smear campaigns, Turkey has truly completed another election that is an example to the world with its strong democracy and fair and secure democratic election system. All actors within the democratic political competition must protect Turkey's competent democracy like the apple of their eye and defend Turkey's democracy against all kinds of external and internal attacks.
The primary task that voters have given to every party that sees itself as successful in these elections is this: You cannot benefit from the blessings of Turkey's democracy and then become a tool for attacks against Turkey; you cannot remain indifferent to these attacks. You must defend and develop Turkey and our democracy together with the government. We will all see whether the opposition, which was successful in these local elections, will fulfill the requirement of the task given by the people to give our democracy the value it deserves.
"IT IS NEVER POSSIBLE TO GENERATE DEMANDS BASED ON LOCAL ELECTIONS IN TERMS OF THE PRESIDENTIAL SYSTEM"
When looking at the general result of the local elections, it is understood that even though the opposition was successful in the local elections, the People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) will continue to hold the lead in the general vote distribution through local councils.
The point that must be emphasized is that it is never possible to generate election-oriented demands directed at the Government and the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) based on local election results in terms of the presidential system. While the issue of the impact of local elections on general elections is only addressed in extremely extraordinary situations even in a parliamentary system, thinking that such an effect would occur in a presidential system is nothing more than wishful thinking. There may be those who have these dreams, but the system casts such delusions aside.
"THOSE WHO MAKE CALCULATIONS FOR GENERAL ELECTIONS SHOULD NOT WASTE THEIR EFFORT, IN MY OPINION"
In my opinion, those who make calculations for general elections based on the vote percentages parties received through local councils should not waste their effort. Turkey will implement reform policies in every field during the four-year election-free period until 2028. President Erdoğan, with his Country Leadership, will lead Turkey to reach new stages in line with the perspective of an Independent and Strong Turkey. Let no one have any doubts."
