The CHP group chairmanship puzzle: Two sides face off

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel invited deputies to a meeting at the headquarters in Ankara following the "absolute nullity" decision at the party congress, and was re-elected as group chairman by the votes of the deputies at this meeting.

However, the group supporting Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, who had previously come to office via a court decision, argues that this election should be annulled on the grounds that it did not comply with procedures.

The opposing wing is united in the view that the vote was not held in Parliament and that the participation of Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey Tekin Bingöl in the vote was contrary to parliamentary custom, claiming that the result was a fait accompli.

The administration under the leadership of Özgür Özel states that the results of the group chairmanship election have been conveyed to the Speaker of the Parliament and that there are no official issues.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, the prevailing view among CHP sources is: "To remove a Group Chairman from office, 35 deputies must submit a motion of no confidence, and then the support of 75 deputies must be obtained in a new election. However, since sufficient signatures and support for this could not be secured within the group, the opposing side is trying to create a perception. Similar closed group meetings were held during the Kılıçdaroğlu administration where important decisions were made. Today's objections are entirely an effort to create a perception."
