The 'Demirtaş' effect in Istanbul: 'He is interfering in politics'

Sözcü newspaper columnist İsmail Saymaz wrote an article regarding the claims that former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş's wife, Başak Demirtaş, would be a candidate for Istanbul in the local elections.

Saymaz stated in his article, in which he used the phrases, "Selahattin Demirtaş, who announced that he had left active politics on May 31 after last year's election, is interfering in politics through his wife 7 months later. Just like in the 'Walk, Mr. Kemal' instance," that the DEM Party is also uncomfortable with this move by Demirtaş.

Saymaz reported the following:

"There is now a strong tendency toward fielding a candidate. Our people want it that way too. The state and the government are also stirring it up. They are encouraging us to remain without an alliance. They know that their own victory depends on that."
