The 'opening' backfires: Crisis over poll results in MHP

Public opinion polls conducted in recent weeks in MHP circles point to a decline in the party's vote share. MHP sources suggest that these polls are intended to deliberately portray the party as weak. It is claimed that the results in the polls do not reflect the party's true strength and that this is a perception operation. It is noted that this situation is not limited to the MHP, and that the number of undecided voters among AKP supporters is also increasing.

According to a report by Cumhuriyet, it is believed within the MHP that the new 'opening' process lies behind these developments. The government's initiative to establish a commission in Parliament by taking a step similar to the previous 'opening' process has created unrest among the nationalist base. Comments from within the party state that the events of the 2013-2015 period are still fresh in memory and that repeating a similar mistake could lead to a loss of trust among voters. The view that the main reason for the erosion of the People's Alliance is the 'opening' debates is coming to the fore.

Some MHP members, however, argue that the reactions to the polls should not be exaggerated. It is thought that the impact of the 'opening' debates may diminish as economic and local issues come to the agenda in the autumn. However, a warning is issued that if the sensitivities of the nationalist base are ignored, a situation similar to 2015 could be encountered.
