Vahap Seçer: 'Our biggest goal is for the CHP to enter the elections in unity'
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and Union of Municipalities of Türkiye President Vahap Seçer gave constructive messages regarding the recent debates within the CHP. Seçer stated, "Our goal is to take the CHP to the upcoming elections as a whole. While doing this, we must take our party to the convention where it will elect its chairman and organs as soon as possible, if possible, to put an end to these debates."
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and Union of Municipalities of Türkiye President Vahap Seçer met with party members at the Republican People's Party (CHP) Mut District Headquarters. The meeting was attended by CHP Mersin Deputies Gülcan Kış and Talat Dinçer, as well as CHP Mut District Chairman Abdurrahman Günay.
In his speech there, Seçer emphasized that the history of the CHP has been the center of solutions during critical processes in Türkiye's political past. Stating that the CHP has played an important role in the country's existence, from the founding of the Republic to the transition to democracy and various political crises, Seçer said, "The CHP was there everywhere, from the founding of the Republic to the transition to a multi-party democratic order, from political crises to government collapses. In every period, the CHP has been the key to solving problems. That is why we are used to these. We were not established just yesterday to take our place in parliament today. Our roots go back to the national struggle for independence. As the successors and heirs of the political formation founded by cadres who came from the battlefields, we know how to struggle, how to be victorious, how to uphold democracy, and how to sacrifice everything for this cause."
"ATTACKS ON THE CHP ARE NOT NEW"
Seçer said that various attacks have been carried out against the CHP for a long time, and that they have witnessed harsh attempts against mayors, especially in the last year and a half. Noting that many mayors have been arrested and some have been released, but some bureaucrats and council members are still in prison, Seçer emphasized that despite all these negativities, the services of the municipalities continue.
"TRUST IN THE JUDICIARY HAS ERODED SERIOUSLY"
Touching upon the absolute nullity decision, Seçer stated that this issue is being kept on the agenda deliberately and that there is no place for absolute nullity in democracies. In his own words: "A political party holds its congress 2 and a half years ago. 2 and a half years later, they say; 'We consider this convention you held void.' From now on, the elections held by associations, political parties, and cooperatives have no value. This means that elections held 3-4 years later can be canceled. However, what we knew was this; elections are held, and there are objections to the provincial and district election boards or the Supreme Election Council. The Supreme Election Council makes the final decision, and this decision is final.
None of us would want the law to be used as a tool in Türkiye, or for the judiciary to be further damaged in terms of reputation day by day. Where will we trust if there is no justice? Now, if something happens to you, if you are attacked, or if someone takes your property unlawfully, where will you apply? But I am afraid that the citizen has reached such a point that trust in the judicial system has reached the lowest level in the history of the Republic. No one has the right to do this. But unfortunately, this government has reinforced this with the unlawful practices it has carried out recklessly."
A CALL TO STAND TOGETHER
Pointing out that the debates within the CHP are intended to harm the party, Seçer suggested that division and conflict would harm the party and its candidates, and that common sense and calm should prevail instead of fights. Seçer said, "Let us not shout at each other with high-dose criticisms just to get applause. The most important rule in exiting this process is to protect our unity and togetherness."
Furthermore, stating that the fragmentation of the party or turning towards new political formations would provide an advantage to the current government, Seçer underlined that it is imperative for the CHP to act as a whole for the future of the country.
Emphasizing that the ordinary convention to be held in November 2025 should take place as soon as possible, that the debates should end, and that the CHP should prepare for the elections in a strong manner, Seçer said, "We must remain as a whole. If we fragment, not only will we be weakened, but those who want to destroy us will also achieve their goal sooner."
EMPHASIS ON A STRONG CHP
Stating that the party has deep-rooted cadres and that experienced politicians are needed, Seçer addressed the party members with these words: "Everyone will do their part in this crisis process, and we will overcome this crisis. Our goal is to take the CHP to the upcoming elections as a whole. While doing this, we must take our party to the convention where it will elect its chairman and organs as soon as possible, if possible, to put an end to these debates. We are making an intense effort for this now. I hope everyone will help in this regard with their understanding approach and love for the country; with their love and awareness for the CHP.
As soon as possible, we will all successfully establish a process where the crisis in the CHP is overcome, a process towards the better is working, and which will raise the hopes of our voters and our nation. I believe in this with all my heart. We are all people of struggle walking on the same path. We are a family, and family is sacred. We are all brothers, sisters, and older siblings to one another. We will sit down with this awareness and solve these problems with composure and calm. This is what befits the wisdom of the CHP, the members of the CHP, and these people who follow the path of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk."
