As people across Turkey took to the streets following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the sharing of images showing President Erdoğan receiving Chinese Ambassador Jiang Xuebin drew attention.
Following the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu this morning, protests have gained momentum nationwide. In Istanbul, CHP deputies began a march from the Parliament building toward the CHP Headquarters.
POLICE INTERVENTION ON VATAN AVENUE
Vatan Avenue was closed by order of the Istanbul Governor's Office, but Istanbul University students and other crowds broke through police barricades and continued their march toward Saraçhane. Similar protests were held in Muğla, but police intervened in these demonstrations with tear gas.
MAJOR VOLATILITY IN EXCHANGE RATES
As the protests continued, exchange rates hit new records. The Turkish lira fell to its lowest level in history.
AT THE SAME TIME, A POST ABOUT ERDOĞAN FROM THE DIRECTORATE OF COMMUNICATIONS
While the protests were ongoing, the Directorate of Communications shared moments on its social media account showing President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan receiving Chinese Ambassador Jiang Xuebin at the Presidential Complex. The post included the following statements:
“Our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, received Chinese Ambassador Jiang Xuebin at the Presidential Complex. During the reception, Ambassador Xuebin presented his letter of credence to our President, Mr. Erdoğan.”
