Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is the person who has been serving as the President of Somalia since May 15, 2022.  He also served as the President of Somalia between 2012 and 2017. Mohamud later returned to office in 2022.

Mohamud was born on November 29, 1955, in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. A member of the Abgaal Hawiye clan, Mohamud comes from a middle-class family.

Mohamud received his bachelor's degree in political science from the Somali National University in 1978. Subsequently, he earned a master's degree in international relations from the University for Peace in 1981.

Mohamud began his career as an undersecretary in the Somali government. He held various positions at the United Nations in the 1980s. During the civil war in Somalia in the 1990s, he served as a senior executive at SomaliTelecom.

Mohamud entered politics in 2011 and founded the Union for Peace and Development Party. In the 2012 presidential elections, he was elected president by receiving 190 votes out of 328 members of parliament.

During Mohamud's first term as president, significant steps were taken toward ensuring security and stability in Somalia. Furthermore, Somalia's relations with the international community were improved.

Mohamud ran for office again in the 2017 presidential elections. However, Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo won the election.

Mohamud ran again in the 2022 presidential elections. This time, he defeated Farmajo and was elected president for the second time.

Mohamud continues his efforts for the reconstruction and development of Somalia.
