Zafer Party Chairman Ümit Özdağ to remain in custody
The court has ruled that Zafer Party Chairman Prof. Dr. Ümit Özdağ will remain in custody.
Following an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into remarks made by Özdağ regarding President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his party's provincial chairmen consultation meeting held on January 19, Özdağ, who was taken into custody, was ordered to remain in detention by the court today.

WHAT HAPPENED?
An ex officio investigation was launched against Ümit Özdağ for "insulting the President" due to his remarks directed at President Erdoğan during his party's provincial chairmen consultation meeting on January 19, and the investigation was subsequently expanded to include the charge of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
Özdağ, who was detained in Ankara, was brought to the Istanbul Police Department. After his procedures at the police station, Özdağ underwent a medical check-up at Bakırköy Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital and was then brought to the Istanbul Courthouse.
Following his statement taken by the Terror Crimes Investigation Bureau, Özdağ was referred to the duty magistrate judge with a request for his arrest on the charge of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility."
